Monica Onyango    , RN/M, MPH, MS, PhD

Monica Onyango     is an instructor in the International Health Department at Boston University School of Public Health. She teaches courses on management of disasters and complex humanitarian emergencies and sexual and reproductive health in disaster settings. Her recent research concerns women’s experiences with abortion complications, post abortion care and male involvement in reproductive health. Monica is interested in reproductive health, maternal and child health, community economic development in relation to HIV/AIDS, and health care among populations affected by disasters. Monica is also interested in global nursing issues---specifically the role of nurse midwives in maternal and child health in developing countries. She has years of experience working in relief and development in Southern Sudan, Kenya and Angola. She also served in the Kenya Ministry of Health (MOH) for ten years as a nursing officer, and as a lecturer at the Nairobi Medical Training College School of Nursing. Monica received her nursing and midwifery training from Kenya Medical Training College Nairobi, diploma in advanced nursing from Nairobi University, Masters in Public Health from Boston University School of Public Health, Masters in Science from Boston College, School of Nursing, and a PhD from Boston College School of Nursing.

Samatha Reddy Panati, MS (Nutrition), MPH (Maternal and Child Health)

Samatha Reddy Panati is a first year doctoral student (international maternal and child health) at the Boston University School of Public Health.  She works at the Boston Public Health Commission’s Research and Evaluation Office.  Her role includes monitoring Boston programs in maternal and child health, anti- violence and chronic disease prevention. Prior to her current position, Samatha worked with CARE-India on the implementation of an anemia control project working with pregnant women in Gangadhara, a rural area in the state of Andhra Pradesh.  She also worked as a faculty member at the Institute of Health Systems, Hyderabad, India on the evaluation of government health policies and developing a state action plan for the department of family welfare to improve the reproductive health services in Andhra Pradesh. Samatha is interested in shaping the health policies and systems that deliver Emergency Obstetric Care in India.  Samatha received her Master of Science degree in Nutrition from Sri Venkateswara University (Andhra Pradesh) and her Master of Public Health from Boston University School of Public Health.

Dr. Joseph Ruminjo

Joseph K. Ruminjo, an obstetrician-gynecologist by training, is the Senior Clinical Advisor for EngenderHealth's Fistula Care and Safe Motherhood Program. In this role, he develops and implements strategies and program activities in maternal health in collaboration with national counterparts in Africa and Asia. Dr. Ruminjo provides technical assistance and training to program staff and partners in Africa and works to strengthen the integration of maternal health and postabortion care with other reproductive health services. He has worked as a clinician, a professor of medicine, and has provided technical assistance and on-the-job training to nongovernmental organizations and ministries of health. Dr. Ruminjo's expertise extends beyond the prevention and treatment of obstetric fistula and the provision of maternal health and postabortion care to include development of strategies for the prevention of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections, contraceptive technology, integrated reproductive health services, quality improvement, and male engagement in reproductive health. He has published more than 30 peer-reviewed articles and technical reports addressing these subjects. Dr. Ruminjo studied medicine at the University of Nairobi, and completed a Fellowship in Clinical Trials and Contraceptive Technology with Family Health International.

Lisa Russell, MPH

Documentary Filmmaker and Founder of Governess Films

Lisa Russell is an Emmy® Award-winning filmmaker with a background in humanitarian and international development work. She holds a MPH in International Health from Boston University. Ms. Russell has produced films in multiple countries throughout South America and Africa on the health and well-being of populations. Her films are tied into advocacy, fundraising or legislative efforts with UN and other international agencies. Her films are screened at universities, conferences, festivals and hill briefings-reaching thousands of people and sparking dialogue about U.S. responsibility in global affairs. In 2003, she produced "Love, Labor, Loss," a documentary film about women living with obstetric fistula in Niger. In 2005, Ms. Russell worked with Zap Mama to create a 3-week nationwide initiative of film screenings and musical performances to increase awareness of global women's health. In 2009, she won a Boston/New England Emmy® Award in the Outstanding Advanced Media Interactivity category for her film, "Bi-Racial Hair." Her most recent film, "Not Yet Rain," was a collaborative project with Ipas. The film explores abortion in Ethiopia through the voices of women who have faced the challenge of accessing safe care in Ethiopia. Residing in Brooklyn, NY, Ms. Russell is a teaching artist with Urban Word NYC. She leads workshops blending film screenings and open mics for young artists that initiate awareness and dialogue about social issues.

Dr. Jeremy Shiffman

Jeremy Shiffman is Associate Professor of Public Administration at the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, Syracuse University. His research concerns the political dynamics of health and population policy-making in poor countries. Dr. Shiffman has a particular interest in health policy agenda-setting. He has published in multiple journals, including the Lancet, the American Journal of Public Health, the Bulletin of the World Health Organization, Social Science and Medicine, Population and Development Review, the British Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Health Policy and Planning, Studies in Family Planning, International Family Planning Perspectives and Public Administration and Development. Dr. Shiffman has written about maternal mortality, infectious disease control, HIV/AIDS, family planning, reproductive health, donor funding for health, and health sector reform. He has conducted research in many countries across Asia, Africa and Latin America. Dr. Shiffman teaches courses on health and population policy in developing countries, public policy and administration in developing countries, and public administration and democracy. Dr. Shiffman received a bachelor's degree summa cum laude in philosophy from Yale University, a master's degree in international relations from Johns Hopkins University and a doctorate in political science from the University of Michigan.
