CESAREAN COMMUNITY OF PRACTICE

In order to foster dialogue among experts in specific sub-fields of maternal health, the Maternal Health Task Force has helped convene communities of practice around certain issues. According to Etienne Wenger, "Communities of practice exist to bring together individuals with interest and expertise in a given topic to exchange ideas and collectively improve their knowledge and understanding of it."

Meeting Summary

Given increased recognition of the under and over-use of cesarean birth in low income countries, a working group of the Child Health Epidemiology Reference Group focused on improving coverage measurement (referred to as Major Activity 13, or CHERG MA13) and the Maternal Health Task Force (MHTF) sponsored a one day meeting of researchers to explore the development of an expanded list of population and health facility-based indicators related to cesarean birth. The meeting consisted of presentations and discussions of indicators regarding cesarean birth from very low to high cesarean birth rate settings.

At the end of the meeting, participants agreed that the four highest priority tasks are: 1) to develop and validate a question/s to detect emergency cesareans that could be incorporated into interview-based questionnaires for women of reproductive age; 2) to establish and promote an internationally recognized classification system of indications for cesarean birth; 3) to find funding for a student and/or staff within concerned institutions to explore existing datasets and to produce, annotate and disseminate as many of the proposed indicators in this document as possible; and 4) to establish a public domain web-site where questionnaires and associated publications could be viewed and discussed in a blog-format.
